Have your ever experienced an episode in your life when nothing made sense anymore?
You moved into a dark abyss, the feelings were hopelessness, helplessness and depression. The reality as you knew it collapsed.
You were not sure there would be any light ahead in this tunnel. You were scared this was going to be the new reality in your life. Feeling side-swept and desperate, you had no idea how you got there.
The collapse of our life is oftentimes referred to as the Dark Night of the Soul.
And it truly feels dark. You feel so low, so sad, not sure what the meaning of anything is anymore.
Dark Night of the Soul could happen after a sudden tragedy, the death of a loved one or any circumstance in life that brings us to our knees. But it can also happen out of the blue. This dark force can permeate our existence without any trace of why.
What is happening during this time is death.
Death of what your reality was. Death of how you perceived your life, your goals and your surroundings.
But here’s the thing…
There will be a rebirth.
If you’ve ever experienced the Dark Night of the Soul, you can’t fathom a rebirth even being possible. Any hope, any light, is shattered and gone.
But there will be a rebirth.
If you find yourself in such a situation, don’t ask “Why did this happen to me?” Ask yourself, “What am I supposed to gain from this?”
The top question is dis-empowering. The bottom question is empowering.
And to find a small sliver of empowerment will give you strength to move on.
You may not acquire the answer right away. Because this storm is usually too powerful to go away with a simple question.
But keep asking.
And be open to receive.
In a time when your body, mind and spirit seem to have shut down, asking yourself what is in store for you will help you remain open – even slightly.
And when the Dark Night of the Soul does pass, a new you will emerge.
The reality as you knew it before will not be the same. With awareness, you’ll realize you’ve moved into deeper surrender.
You’ll realize there is a sense of very subtle aliveness within you that is different than before.
You move into more presence.
And you move into a deeper dimension of awakening.
You may be able to make sense of what happened to you. Or you may not be able to make sense of what happened to you.
But you let it be. Because you are a little more removed from the labels and patterns of your mind.
And this is good.
All is well.
It’s part of the irony of life… That level of darkness will actually lead to more light, surrender and awakening, if we’re open to it.
We may never be able to fully understand the why’s and how’s of such dark phases in life.
But one thing is sure… When it’s all said and done… And the dark phase is behind us, we will be able to say we are in a much better place than before.
We move into more:
Sometimes it takes a push from life to get us to the other, more beautiful side.
Again, the key is to recognize the darkness is a phase in life, and not the end-all to life.
