Ego vs Presence: Understanding the Two Further

I’d like to share an excerpt with you from the book A Course in Miracles, regarding the ego:
 
"“Now” has no meaning to the ego. The present merely reminds it of past hurts, and it reacts to the present as if it were the past. The ego cannot tolerate release from the past, and although the past is over, the ego tries to preserve its image..." P.246
 
The above is a powerful statement for us to understand, to gauge if we are fully present.
 
Fuel for the ego part of our mind is thoughts of the past; specifically thoughts of the past that do not serve us anymore.
 
Notice your thoughts.
 
Are they of scenarios from your relationship that bothered you?
Are you thinking those thoughts because you’d like to analyze the situation?
Are you thinking those thoughts because you’d like to figure out why that person hurt you the way they did?
Are you thinking those thoughts because you feel by analyzing the situation, you can move on from the situation?
 
Well try this….
 
Let go of the thoughts.
Fully let go.
 
Don’t think about that situation anymore.
 
Here’s why:

  • When you are thinking thoughts about a situation that hurt you, and you are feeling upset all over again, you will not come to a peaceful resolution.
  • You are thinking and feeling from the ego part of your mind anytime negativity arises.

 
The real truth will not come out when you are functioning with your ego.
 
Your ego will only give you reasons to justify your hurt and anger.
 
And how good will that truly make you feel?
How peaceful will that truly make you feel?
 
So let it go.
 
Come fully into the present moment.
 

  • Anytime you feel your thoughts and emotions escalating towards the negative, stop them in their tracks.
  • Bring your focus to the environment you are in.
  • Focus on your breath.
  • Or even place deep focus on the fabric of the clothes you are wearing.

 
Point being, take your focus into what is in front of you, and not what is swirling in your mind.
 
It is only when we live from presence that TRUE answers, solutions and peace will come to us.
 
Attachment to the mind will generate more chaos before it will generate any answers.
 
Let it go.
 
And the answers and peace you are seeking will naturally come to you. They will come to you from a deeper part of yourself.
 
Know the answers may not come right away.
Be patient with the unfolding process.
 
But when the answers do come, you will feel it is the right answer.
 
Right answers come with a feeling… a knowing.
And this knowing is followed by a feeling of peace, of alignment.
 
It will be so worth your wait.
