An Exercise on How to Have a Cup Half Full Mentality Towards Life

With this video, I talk to you about having a cup-half-full mentality towards life.

Generally, in life we are focused on everything we still need to get done – accomplishing our goals and desires. So we are basically focused on the future.

And although this is good, because to live in the past is not good, we still need to take time to reflect on the past.

In order to have a cup-half-full mentality towards life, we really need to take some time and see how far we’ve come. You can do this activity once per year. New Years is usually a good time to reflect on the past year.

Take into account all your major and minor accomplishments. Include everything: The baby steps you took, the projects you completed, the hobbies you got into, the beautiful moments with your family..

Everything adds up.

I want to also share another exercise for you to do. Write out your life in increments of 12 years. And within each 12 year interval, write out a total of five or six things you felt good about/survived/accomplished.

For example, in the years 0-12, you could write you achieved eating your vegetables, listening to your parents, getting good grades, getting into the soccer team you wanted, finding the courage to make new friends in your new school.

Do this also for ages 12-24, 24-36, 36-48, 48-60 and on… Depending on your current age.

Examples of surviving life and achievements during any particular 12 year increment could be:
Surviving your parent’s divorce
Surviving your own divorce
Surviving the death of a parent
Getting a degree
The promotion you had worked to attain
Amazing moments that were shared with your family

When you take the time to look at your life and see how far you’ve come, and truly take it in, is when you develop a cup-half-full mentality towards life. It becomes fuel for moving on, for going forward.

We learn and embody our strengths through this exercise.

When we recognize all we’ve accomplished and survived, we deepen our Self-Perspective.
